Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as an infant. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay quickly was captivated with an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury, and then look through their trash. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
